How to Order a Perforated Sheet So the Pattern Is Cut Once

Stock perforated patterns are numbered. The order still needs the metal, the thickness, the sheet size and whether the edge is left blank.

Key takeaways
  • Start with the pattern: hole shape, hole size, pitch and angle, or the stock pattern number.
  • MS, GI, stainless and aluminium are one range. Copper and brass are separate ranges with the same pattern numbers.
  • Thickness and sheet size are not printed on the pattern.
  • Say if the border must stay blank for a frame or a weld.

A perforated sheet is punched from a flat blank. The pattern tells the press the hole. It does not tell the shop the thickness or the finished rectangle.

What the pattern fixes

Stock patterns run 01 to 29. Each one is a hole shape (round, square or hex), a hole size, a pitch and an angle, 60° staggered or 90° straight. If you have a sample, the pattern number is enough. If you have a drawing, send hole, pitch and angle and we match it to a stock pattern or quote it as a special.

What you still have to name

Metal. Mild steel, GI, stainless and aluminium share one catalogue. Copper has its own. Brass has its own. The pattern numbers repeat. The metal does not.

Thickness, in millimetres. A decorative screen and a machine guard are not the same gauge.

Sheet size. Flat sheets are not the corrugated line. Corrugated perforated is 4×8, 4×10 or 4×12, finished 1 m wide.

Blank edge, if a frame, gasket or weld needs a border with no holes. If you say nothing, ask yourself whether the holes can run to the cut.
